Mey walked out of the storage building and shook her head. “There was nothing of interest in there.”

That wasn’t entirely true, but what she’d heard in the echoes had nothing to do with the Kra-ell, and a lot to do with the current inhabitants of the school. As it turned out, the storage building had been frequently used for amorous encounters between teachers, administrators, groundskeepers, delivery people, and Fates knew who else.

Mey was still trying to shake off what she’d heard, and the sounds of passion hadn’t even been the worst. There had been screaming arguments about broken promises, crying fits about real and perceived betrayals, mean-spirited gossip, and evil plotting against this one or that.

It was good that the faculty had no idea what she could do, or some members would have been very worried.

Yamanu pushed away from the wall he’d been leaning against and put his arm around her shoulders. “If you didn’t find anything, why are you shaking your head?”

“People are nasty when they think no one can see or hear them, and I was never into pornography. This storage building was used more as a shag-pad than to store stuff.”

Both his brows shot up. “Is that so? Who shagged whom?”

“It wasn’t the Kra-ell, and thankfully, not the students. I only saw and heard adults, and given their clothing and vernacular, they were all contemporary. I wonder if Vrog knows what’s going on under his nose. It seems that everyone is shagging everyone else, people are plotting and scheming to get promoted and to get others demoted, and don’t even start me on the drama.”

Yamanu sighed. “It’s a shame that you can’t share what you see and hear with me. I could have used the entertainment. I’m so bored that I’m reduced to watching reruns of old episodes of South Park.”

“My poor baby.” She leaned closer and kissed his strong jaw. “You don’t need to trail after me. I’m perfectly safe on my own here.”

She felt awkward with Yamanu and the two Guardians following her around. It was a school, not an enemy camp.

“Stella and Richard thought that they were perfectly safe in that sleepy little town, and they got a nasty surprise. I’m not gambling with your safety. Especially not here.”

“Why? Do you sense anything?”

Yamanu wasn’t empathic, but he was very intuitive, and it would be a mistake to ignore his intuition’s warnings.

He shook his head. “It’s a general feeling of things not being right about this place, but it might be because of what happened here two decades ago. I think the impact it left on the compound is overshadowing any current or impending threats.” He rubbed a hand over his jaw. “I wonder if that’s why my intuition didn’t warn me when Vrog planned his attack on Stella.”

“Maybe you didn’t feel anything because he wasn’t going to harm her. The Fates had no reason to sound the alarm.”

“I didn’t consider it from that angle, but you might be right.”

Smiling, she looped her arm around his waist.
